The story of the ducks
This story was written by me and by grandmother when I was a child of ~6 It is a true story
Chapter 1
The fight of the three ducks
Once upon a time there were two old ducks and they lived in a big garden. One died, and the mother duck, Samantha, was very sad. She didn’t have any ducklings to accompany her. Alixe was sad too.
So Alixe took her grandson to buy two new ducks. She forgot to bring a box to put the ducklings in, but the kind duck farmer gave them one for free. The farmer took the ducklings by the neck and put them into the box and cut holes in the box for them to breathe and see out of.
They took the ducks home and put them
in a fenced pen in the garden.
in a fenced pen in the garden.
They named them Avis and Cherry. Then they left the ducks for a while, keeping watch over them. They hoped they would get used to each other.
When they opened the pen, Samantha did a mighty charge at Cherry. Alixe yelled: “Quick! Quick! Close the pen!”
It took some time before her grandson could get the gap closed, and in the meantime ducks were rushing and rushing and Avis was running back and forth trying to defend Cherry. Samantha rushed in and Avis and Cherry rushed out.
While was fixing the fence, Alixe got Samantha out and Avis and Cherry in again. She was grateful that the duck farmer had told them the right way to pick up a duck was by the neck.
And everything was peaceful again as the ducks rested quietly.
Chapter 2
A dramatic moment
The next morning her grandson took videos of the ducks in the kitchen garden.
After breakfast they let out Samantha, Avis and Cherry to go to the pond. Cherry got lost. Alixe was chasing her around and around to try to pick her up by the neck so she could take her to the others. Eventually she did.
In the meantime in the pond, there was a big commotion going on, with splashing and diving. Samantha climbed onto Avis’s back and tried to push his head under the water. Alixe and her grandson were afraid she would drown him so Alixe chased Samantha out of the pond so Avis could breathe. Avis couldn’t climb out of the pond at first. They put bricks at one end to help the young ducks get out the next time they were swimming.
Then all three of them settled down together to groom themselves next to the pond.
Chapter 3
The big wide world
They slept next to the pond that night.
The third day was a peaceful day.
They explored the whole garden gradually as Samantha took them to each new place. Sometimes Avis and Cherry didn’t do what she said immediately. When she carried on quacking they eventually moved off. Everywhere they went they dug around for insects to eat, and poohed.
Late in the afternoon and after supper, her grandsom took photos of them.
They slept on the drive-way where the paving stones retained the heat of the day.
